Applied Maths practice, strand by strand

Not another folder of past papers. All 12 strands of the 2023 specification, broken into questions you answer one at a time, so you find out which strand is actually costing you marks before the mocks do.

Free while Applied Maths is in beta. No card, no trial countdown.

A QuizPerCard multiple-choice question on Difference Equations: the sequence 2, 9, 28, 65, 126, 217 with its first and second differences, four answer options, and a worked explanation showing the third differences are constant so the rule is cubic.
A real question from strand 8. Every answer explains the reasoning and names the mistake the wrong options come from - here, stopping at the second differences and concluding the sequence is not polynomial.

Built for two kinds of student

Taking Applied Maths without a class

Plenty of schools do not offer it, so you are working through the course on your own or in an evening grind. The strands are ordered the way the course builds, so you can start at strand 1 knowing you have not skipped what the next one depends on.

Sitting it in school, revising alone

You have the class and the textbook. What you do not have is a fast way to find out which strand you are weakest at before a test tells you. Answer twenty questions and it is obvious.

How a session works

  1. 1

    Pick a strand

Start where your class is, or at strand 1 if you are working through it alone. Each strand is its own set of questions rather than a whole past paper.

  2. 2

    Answer, and get told why

Every question carries the reasoning behind the right answer and the specific mistake each wrong one comes from - the ones examiners see every June.

  3. 3

See what you keep getting wrong

Your weak strands surface on their own, so revision goes to the topics costing you marks instead of the ones you already know.

The 10 strands with written notes

Each one has its own set of questions in the app, and written notes you can read first.

  • Strand 1Units and Vectors
  • Strand 2Uniform Acceleration
  • Strand 3Projectiles
  • Strand 4Newton's Laws and Connected Particles
  • Strand 5Work, Power, Energy and Momentum
  • Strand 6Impacts and Collisions
  • Strand 7Motion in a Circle
  • Strand 8Difference Equations
  • Strand 9Differentiation and Integration
  • Strand 10Differential Equations

Networks and Graphs (strand 11) and Optimal Paths (strand 12) have their questions in the app, but the written notes for them are not up yet, so they are not listed above. Those two posts are next.

Teaching Applied Maths?

It is free for your whole class - no licence, no per-student cost, no card. Tell us which strand your group is on and what you need that is not there yet, and we will build it. Applied Maths is the subject this was made for, not one of forty on a list.

Find your weakest strand this week

Twenty questions is enough to know where the marks are going. The exam is in June - the strand you avoid now is the one you will avoid in the paper.
